Installing an Oil Cooler
Installing an Oil Cooler
Thinking about installing an oil cooler? Well if you're living in a place like Florida (like we at the shop are) where temperatures routinely reach 95 degrees it might be a Real good idea. It'll help prolong the life of your oil but more importantly your motor!
The ideal operating temperature for a Harley should be between 180 & 220 degrees. If your running consistently below 180 degrees you get water, acid & sludge build up. If your running at 220 or more your motor oil breaks down more quickly and you loose its lubricating properties. That said, back to the matter at hand...installing an oil cooler.
If you choose to install an oil cooler, one thing you might want to consider is installing one with a thermostat. This is a good idea if your going on some short 20 minute trips since it won't allow the oil to flow through the cooler until it reaches operating temperature, kinda like the thermostat in your car.
A good cooler can drop engine temperature as much as 15 degrees and they're easy to install, definitely a do it yourself job. No longer do you have to run long lines under the bike back to tap in to your existing oil lines. The best time to install it is when you do your next oil change, since we have an adapter that fits between the oil filter mount and the oil filter on your bike. You simply take off your old oil filter install the oil cooler adapter in its place and install your new oil filter on to the adapter. There are 2 fittings coming off the adapter for the oil lines that go to your cooler. That's it your done.
It's a relatively simple addition that can save a lot of wear and tear on your motor. Stop by and see our selection or Click Here to see the Full Line of Coolers and Adapters.
